For our family Christmas at Blenheim Palace has become a cherished tradition, a day we’ve been enjoying together for years and one that never fails to wow us. It’s the perfect way to officially kick off the festive season combining beautiful lights, immersive storytelling, delicious food, and endless opportunities to make magical memories together.
This year the palace outdid itself with an even bigger Christmas Market, a brand-new palace experience themed around The Wizard of Oz, and the famous Illuminated Trail enhanced with even more spectacular displays.
We began our festive adventure at the Christmas Market in the Great Court. Twinkling lights, wooden chalets, and the scent of festive treats instantly put us in the Christmas spirit with stalls that had unique handmade gifts, artisanal decorations, and sweet treats.
Of course, the food was one of the highlights for us. I treated myself to a festive duck and pigs in blankets wrap with cranberry sauce and stuffing which was absolutely delicious before getting a hot chocolate with marshmallows.
The market isn’t just about shopping and eating as it has The Great Skate, a covered ice rink in the heart of the Great Court. There’s also the Observation Wheel which offers views of the palace, Christmas Market, and the wider estate.
For our family, starting at the market is a tradition in itself. Between the food, lights, and ice skating, it’s a wonderful way to get everyone into the Christmas spirit before heading inside the palace.
This year Blenheim Palace introduced The Palace of Oz, a completely new experience that brought the beloved story of The Wizard of Oz to life. It felt like we were stepping inside a storybook from the moment we passed through the twinkling hot air balloon entrance into Kansas.
Walking through the State Rooms, each space told the story in a beautiful, immersive way. We followed the yellow brick road through the colourful Land of the Munchkins, spotting the Scarecrow, Tin Woodman, Cowardly Lion, and Toto along the way.
The journey became darker and more thrilling as we entered the Wicked Witch’s Dark Forest, with eerie lighting, shadows, and even the occasional flying monkey.
Finally, the trail led to the glittering Emerald City, where Dorothy awaited under sparkling green lights. Every room was packed with magical touches, whimsical surprises, and lots of interactive elements which made the experience more immersive. Walking through The Palace of Oz felt like stepping into a story!
No visit to Blenheim at Christmas would be complete without the Illuminated Trail, recently named one of the top UK Light Trails. As night fell, the palace grounds were transformed into a winter wonderland, more magical than ever.
We started at the twinkling Water Terraces, then wandered through the awe-inspiring Cathedral of Light, a glowing tunnel of thousands of tiny bulbs which is a beautiful backdrop for lots of photos with your family.
The Fire Garden offered a peaceful, magical pause, with hundreds of flickering candles casting a warm glow, before we discovered the new Sea of Light, where waves of colour moved in hypnotic patterns. Paired with the smell of toasted marshmallows and the hot chocolate stands nearby, it was pure festive magic.
The highlight of the evening was the Water Fountain Show, now enhanced with brand-new festive projections across the lake, followed by Alpine-style chalets, colourful trees, and the whimsical Candy Cane Lane. The trail ended with a snowy encounter with Father Christmas, a perfect moment to capture the magic of the season.
For our family Christmas at Blenheim Palace isn’t just a day out, it’s the official start of the festive season. Every year it wows us with something new with it’s delicious market treats, immersive storytelling in the palace, and the breathtaking Illuminated Trail.
It’s a tradition we cherish, creating magical memories together and marking the beginning of our Christmas celebrations in the most memorable way. From young children to adults, there’s something for everyone making it a must-visit for families who want to experience true festive wonder.
