Discovering my personal style is something that I hit a brick wall with every time the season changes. I feel that in the summer I’m happy with my personal style, however when it comes to carrying that over into the colder months I struggle. Over the past few months I’ve been able to define my style further and even though I’m still on my journey with this, I have a few tips that are helping and might help you too if you’re in a similar situation.
Find Your Signature Pieces – This can be anything from an accessory, to a specific colour or print that you love to wear, or certain pieces of clothing such as this duffle coat which is from Original Montgomery and I wear it nearly all the time. Do you find that when you receive a compliment it’s mainly about a specific item you’re wearing such as your bags or shoes? If this is the case then you might have already found out what your signature pieces are and can build your wardrobe from there.

Invest in Versatile Pieces You Love – I’m in love with these gorgeous Harriet Leather Ankle Boots from Jones Bootmaker, everything from the colour to the style reflects my personality. These are an upgrade on the classic Chelsea boot with the sweeping lines to accentuate the silhouette and the sculptured block heel. They add a pop of colour to any outfit and the red is surprisingly versatile. If your pieces are versatile you will be able to use them to style up existing outfits and easily add your personality into them, without having to splash out on lots of new clothing.

Marie Kondo Your Wardrobe – If you haven’t heard of Marie Kondo before, where have you been?! She released a book called ‘The Life-Changing Magic of Tidying Up’ in which she uses the KonMari method. This is a system of simplifying and organising your home, getting rid of physical items that do not bring joy into your life. Using her method you should empty your whole wardrobe and hold each item of clothing individually, if it sparks joy then place it back in your wardrobe, if not then it’s time to part with the item. This is a great way of clearing out your wardrobe so you only have clothes that you love and are a reflection of your personal style, it will also make it easier when you’re looking through trying to figure out what you want to wear for the day.
Seek Inspiration – Instagram is a great place to start! Find people who have a style that you love and follow them to gain inspiration, they will often tag where their clothes are from and you might also discover new brands that you had never heard of before. I love to use the ‘save’ function on Instagram when I see someone wearing an outfit that I absolutely adore, it means that I can always go back and have a look through my favourite outfits I’ve seen when I’m feeling a bit stuck for inspiration. Another great source is Pinterest which is a platform I’ve been obsessed with for a long time.

Discovering your personal style takes time and is a journey, it’s not something that’s going to happen overnight. One of the most important things when developing your style is to be true to yourself, don’t focus on looking like someone else, but just take inspiration from what they wear. Own your style and be proud of it.
