The Sights of Florence

You can’t visit Florence and not fall in love with this beautiful city rich in history and incredible architecture. One of the best views of the city is from the Piazza Michelangelo which is a short walk from the city centre, however if you decide to walk there just bear in mind that even though it’s not far it’s quite a long way up. At the top there’s an incredible panoramic view of the city and the square is dedicated to the city’s most famous Renaissance artist Michelangelo Buonarroti.In the centre there’s a bronze replica of of Michelangelo’s most famous statue, the David. If I could only recommend one place to visit in Florence it would be this Piazza, the views are honestly breathtaking and I can’t believe that I missed this special place on my previous visit to Florence. The Duomo is the city’s most iconic landmark and the breathtaking white, pink and green marble facade with the elegant bell tower dominates Florence’s skyline and city centre. If you want to visit the inside it can be quite a long wait and it wouldn’t be at the top of my my must-do list, however it depends on how long you’re planning on staying in Florence as the outside is spectacular and there’s so many more sights to visit.
Every time I visit Florence I always pass by Porcellino which means ‘the little pig’, he’s also known as ‘the bronze pig’. It’s believed that when visitors rub his snout and put a coin in his mouth and it falls into the grate below it will bring you good luck and you will be sure to return to Florence, so it has now become a little tradition whenever I visit.Opposite is one of my favourite gelato stores in the world; Venchi. They have been making chocolate since the 1800’s and they’re one of the best chocolatiers in Italy. You have the option of including melted chocolate poured into the bottle of the waffle cone and having the outside coated in chocolate and hazelnuts, the combination with the incredibly flavourful gelato is amazing. You can’t visit Italy and not indulge at Venchi! The real statue of David is in the Accademia Gallery however there’s an amazing replica in the city centre in the Piazza della Signoria which is outside Palazzo Vecchio (the town hall). Inside the town hall there are several different courtyards with the first being my favourite, it’s absolutely beautiful and entry is free so definitely worth a visit.There are many sculptures in this area including the Loggia dei Lanzi which is a statue of Perseo holding Medusa’s head, it’s also Aarons favourite sculpture. If you want to visit this is in an open building called Loggia dei Lanzi which is in the corner of the piazza, you’ll notice it almost opposite the statue of David replica. A few minutes walk away you’ll come across the Arno River and Ponte Vecchio. Even though the Ponte Vecchio is always packed with tourists it’s a must-see if you’re visiting and I love browsing the jewellery stores on this bridge, they have so many unique pieces that I’ve never seen anywhere else.As you might have gathered Florence is one of my favourite cities and somewhere I love to return. It’s rich in history and there’s so much to see and do, I would stay for weeks if I could discovering all the little treasures and gems.
